Relationships go through predictable stages as we merge and individuate. There are inevitable power struggles that must be managed. Being able to tell the truth about your experience with the other person in a positive way is important. Likewise, being able to listen without feeling defensive. Building a relationship is like climbing stairs. When you can’t go further, you have reached a riser and need to step up by learning a new skill.
I have enjoyed a happy, long-term marriage (several decades) that has required learning new ways of relating. I’ve studied the research and worked successfully with many couples.
