Happiness Habits
The president of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Martin Seligman pointed out that, while research has revealed much about mental illness, we in the mental health fields know almost nothing about mental health! He inspired a new field of research called Positive Psychology that identifies the qualities and practices that make people strong, resilient, good, and happy.
I participated in Dr. Seligman’s first, multi-month training in Coaching for Authentic Happiness, which showed me three pathways for increasing happiness: Positive Emotion, Passion, and Purpose. Current research adds a fourth pathway, Presence.
Positive Emotions Enhancing your ability to feel joy, wonder, awe, love, enchantment, beauty, oneness, and gratitude.
Passion Being fully engaged in what you are doing, and so carried along by your keen interest, you lose track of time.
Purpose Sensing that you are making a difference in the world.
Presence Letting go of past and future to be aware of the present moment, noticing your sensations, feelings, thoughts, and desires right now.
